This one-of-a-kind dining table was handcrafted from two adjacent black walnut slabs cut from the same tree. The slabs were sourced from a local sawyer in Emmett, Idaho, kiln-dried, and selected for their closely related grain, rich color, and natural live edges.
Rather than arranging the slabs as a traditional mirror-image bookmatch, I rotated one slab 180 degrees. This orientation creates a diagonal relationship between the natural voids and grain patterns: a smaller epoxy-filled opening near one end corresponds with a larger opening on the opposite slab. The result is a more dynamic composition while still preserving the visible connection between the two pieces of wood.
The space between the slabs was filled with black-pigmented epoxy to form a narrow river through the center of the tabletop. The epoxy is dark but not completely opaque; in several areas, the contours of the walnut remain visible as they extend beneath the surface of the river.
Two smaller sections of wood were only narrowly connected to the main slabs when the project began. Rather than removing them, I preserved them in their original positions with epoxy. The slim channels between these sections and the surrounding wood have become some of the table’s most distinctive details.
An Open Pedestal Design
The tabletop is supported by a Flowyline heavy-duty metal pedestal base. I chose a central pedestal design to keep the space beneath the table open, allowing chairs to be positioned comfortably without conventional legs or stretchers interfering with feet and toes.
The brushed-steel base has a powder-coated finish and includes adjustable levelers beneath the legs for fine-tuning the table on an uneven floor. It attaches to the tabletop with removable hardware and can be detached using an Allen wrench.
For transportation, I strongly recommend moving the tabletop and base separately. The assembled table weighs approximately 180 pounds, and separating the two components makes the piece considerably easier and safer to handle.
At 84.75 inches long and 40.75 inches wide, the table comfortably seats six people and can accommodate eight when needed. Its substantial 1.875-inch-thick walnut top and sculptural steel pedestal give it a strong physical presence without compromising legroom or everyday practicality.
This is an individual piece built around the characteristics of one tree. The grain, live edges, natural openings, and relationship between the adjacent slabs cannot be duplicated.
